Rower Impresses on World Stage

Year 12 student Jack Thornton will look to secure a semi-final berth tonight in the World Junior Rowing Championships in Racice, Czech Republic.

Jack competed in the heat of the Junior Men's Coxless Pairs on Thursday night (Melbourne time) with Hamish Wynn-Pope. They finished third in their heat in a time of 6:59.870, which placed them sixth fastest of the 24 crews.

Their coach Andrew Cleary said he was very impressed with the boys' first international row and he believed they had learnt a great deal from the heat. He said they were keen to take it up to their competitors in their repechage, where they must finish first or second to progress to the semi-finals.

The repechage is scheduled for tonight, 10 August at 6.24pm AEST. The race can be streamed live via World Rowing’s Facebook page or can be followed in real time via the Live Tracker icon on their website

Video of their first race can also be accessed on World Rowing's Facebook page here (go to the 1:03 mark for their heat).
