For entry to Year 7 or Year 9 - Thomas Dann Freeman Music Scholarship

The Thomas Dann Freeman Music Scholarships are open to students entering Year 7 or Year 9 who demonstrate significant proficiency and interest in instrumental or vocal music.

Year 7: One scholarship valued at one term’s tuition fees per annum is tenable for six years, with a second term’s fee remission (bursary) to be awarded on the basis of financial need.

Year 9: One scholarship valued at two terms' tuition fees per annum, tenable for four years, will be awarded.

Successful applicants will be expected to contribute significantly to the musical life of the school, and will normally be expected to be enrolled in curriculum music subjects.

Instrumentalists (including pianists) and singers will be required to participate in the appropriate band, orchestra or choir.

Pianists will be expected to assist with piano accompanying of instrumental and vocal performances from time to time, including Chapel services or assemblies, and to contribute to larger ensembles such as the String Orchestra and Concert Band, which often have specific keyboard parts. Opportunities also exist for accompanying the school choir, or House choirs for the annual House Music competition.

Tenure of the scholarships will be reviewed annually and is subject to satisfactory musical and academic progress.

1. Applicants will be required to perform at least two contrasting pieces (total duration of up to 10 minutes), a selection of technical work (including scales and arpeggios) and undergo appropriate aptitude tests (including aural tests for pitch and rhythm as well as a short piece of sight reading material).

2. Part of the performance program may be presented on a second instrument (or voice) if desired.

3. Instrumentalists and singers should be accompanied by piano or backing CD.

4. During the audition, the applicant will be interviewed and should be able to discuss their musical experiences, at school or in the community.

Year 9: The applicant will have completed Grade 5 AMEB or equivalent standard.
