Pastoral Care at the Preparatory School

We believe that effective student management results from good relationships within our school community. We aim to assist students in their intellectual, physical, and emotional development and to recognise the worth, dignity and value of every individual in our College community. Through the development of an understanding of the rights and responsibilities of the members of the school community and the establishment of whole school rules and routines, there exists a consistent and clear approach to behaviour management.

The fostering of high quality relationships among teachers, students, parents and ancillary staff is a responsibility shared by everyone. We encourage our students to recognise their own potential for building acceptance, trust, esteem and friendship amongst their peers. All students have a right to feel safe and to experience positive relationships with their peers and adults within the school community.

Initial relationships are established with the Learning Mentors for each homeroom group - two staff members for each secondary class and one for each of the primary classes.

Further welfare and student management support is available through the appointment of Area Leaders for Upper Primary Years and Secondary Year levels and the overview of the Deputy Head (Welfare).

The support of The Head of Student Services and School Nurse also enriches the opportunities for individual attention.

The adoption of the Restorative Practices philosophy in the Middle School has enabled us to work closely with students; to expect them to reflect on their behaviour and to repair damage to relationships that inappropriate behaviour may have caused.

Students are encouraged to both give and ask for support and are responsible for helping to address behaviour in other students. This fosters a strong sense of community, as well as a sense of safety.
