Fine and Applied Arts
The Visual Arts are an integral and much valued part of life at The Geelong College. In fact, in 2001, The Geelong College was recognised by The Australian newspaper as “one of Australia’s most outstanding schools” in the area of Fine and Applied Arts.
Students have helped to create decorative artistic features in outdoor settings over successive years through the College’s Artist-in-Residence Program. An established artist is appointed each year to work with Year 8 students on a special art work, and several are invited to contribute to the Senior School’s Annual Arts Week.
Students are encouraged to take part in a variety of artistic activities. As they progress through the school, expert staff and visiting professionals guide and inspire students to experiment, experience and embrace subjects and electives including painting, design, ceramics, photography, textiles and woodwork. At vce level, Art (Ceramics, Studio Art, Painting and Photography), Studio Arts (Textiles), Wood Technology and Visual Communication (Graphics) are available. Students consistently achieve excellent results, with works selected to feature in annual exhibitions such as ‘Top Arts’ and ‘Top Designs’.
Unique to The Geelong College, the House of Guilds (known as the hog) is the Senior School’s artistic hub. It is a large, fully equipped workshop that provides an ideal space to explore art, craft and woodwork. It is open to both students and members of the local community seven days a week, with a staff member on duty to provide assistance.
