English as a second language (ESL)
International students with a non-English speaking background are welcomed at the College. All ESL (English as a Second Language) students are assigned a personal tutor who meets with them privately or in small groups for formal tutorials. Their tutor provides extra support in English and is available to arrange further assistance in any subject required.
Once they have reached a reasonable level of English acquisition, ESL students are placed in mainstream English classes, allowing them to develop more sophisticated language skills and mix with a broader student body. Each ESL student’s tutor works closely with their English teacher to ensure that he or she achieves a sound understanding of all work covered. ‘Extra English’ is available to students and reinforces basic structures of English grammar and spelling.
ESL students are also offered an additional program of social activities. During the school term, they meet for organised lunches, social events and weekend outings. A host family scheme links local families with many international students.
