One student's story - Scholarship recipient embraces College life
After seeing a Geelong College scholarship advertisement in the local paper in 2003, 11 year old Xavier Hatch was encouraged by his mum to apply even though he was already enrolled at another school. “It took a bit of time to comprehend that I’d received it,” Xavier explained when he was awarded The Geelong College Scholarship; “I really didn’t have any expectation that I would get in.”
Xavier went on to embrace College life, achieving many academic Merit awards as well as becoming an active participant in the Concert Band, the Debating team, the School’s APS Athletics team and of course playing football and cricket. He explained that one of the best aspects of being a College student was the access to so many opportunities, which he has certainly made the most of; most recently receiving a Distinction in the 2008 Australian Mathematics Competition and a Distinction for Physics in the 2008 Australian Science Olympiad.
2009 sees Xavier as one of the Year 12 School Prefects, a position he has proudly accepted, “It will be a lot of hard work, but it is a way of giving back to the school after I’ve been given so much.” To anyone thinking of applying for a scholarship Xavier said, “You never know what to expect, you don’t know how well you might go. I definitely recommend it.”
The John Kenny Bursary
General Information
This fund was bequeathed to the school by Old Geelong Collegian, Mr John Kenny (1934) and is a memorial to him. His bequest enables the school to establish places for worthy students from a wide range of backgrounds who would not be able to attend The Geelong College without some financial assistance. John Kenny himself was the recipient of bursary assistance during his years at the College.
Eligibility
Bursaries are available for students wishing to enter the College from Years 9 to 11 (in special circumstances, applications at Years 7 or 8 may be considered). The student must be of sound academic merit and be able to demonstrate a desire to make a very positive contribution to the school and to participate in a broad range of the available co-curricular activities.
The allocation of bursaries and the amount of financial support offered is at the discretion of the Principal.
Students who are awarded a bursary will be supported each year until they leave the College, subject to satisfactory progress each year.

Scholarships - General Information
The Geelong College offers a range of scholarships which include Academic, Music and Boarding. The awarding of these scholarships is based on the results of an examination/audition and an interview. Examinations for scholarships are set by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). Students are required to sit the exam at the College on the specified day.
Music scholarship candidates undertake an audition. The audition consists of a study and a solo, or two short solos, as well as sight-reading and aural tests. Students may audition on two or more instruments (including voice) if they would like to do so.
